2012 is the 60th year of the Queen's reign and the Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated widely across the UK, Commonwealth and the World with a lot of the events focussed on the first weekend in June. It will be great time to be in the UK where there is sure to a festive and celebratory buzz not least with a new Bank holiday on the 4th June.

Events before the Jubilee Weekend

Although the main focus of the Jubilee will be the 2-5 June there are lots of things happening before then including:

  • Commonwealth Day - Monday 12th March. Attended by the Prime Minister, High Commissioners and over 1,000 UK school children, Her Majesty The Queen will attend Commonwealth Day Observance in Westminster Abbey to celebrate Her Diamond Jubilee and 60 years as Head of the Commonwealth.
  • Diamond Jubilee Pageant - 10-13 May. Dancers, musicians, military and equestrian displays from around the world will come together for three nights in the private grounds of Windsor Castle
  • Parade and Muster at Windsor - 19 May. Almost 2,500 troops from the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force will parade through Windsor Castle and Windsor town before Her Majesty and The Duke of Edinburgh.

Diamond Jubilee Events on the Celebration Weekend

The Jubilee will be celebrated across the UK here are some events to look out for:

  • Concert at Buckingham Palace - 4th June. A spectacular show which will be the centre piece of the celebrations marking The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
  • Thames River Pageant - 3rd June. The largest flotilla to be assembled on the Thames in modern times. A thousand boats will muster on the river in preparation for the Pageant. There will be rowing boats, working boats and pleasure vessels of all shapes and sizes, dressed with streamers and Union Jacks, stretching for an estimated twelve and a half miles.
  • Service of Thanksgiving - 5th June. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, together with other members of the Royal Family, will attend a service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, which will be followed by a formal carriage procession.
  • The Big Jubilee Lunch - 3rd June. Building on the already popular “Big Lunch” initiative, people will be encouraged to share lunch with neighbours and friends as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The Big Lunch can be anything from a traditional street party to a picnic lunch in small or larger groups.
  • Jubilee Beacons - 4th June. A network of over 2000 beacons will be lit by communities and individuals throughout the United Kingdom, as well as the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Commonwealth to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee
