Sussex is a fantastic county to visit where all the best of coast and country gloriously combine. From picturesque villages, historic homes and gardens to sophisticated towns, sports, leisure attractions, art and culture there really is something for the whole family to enjoy. We have added a few of the many attractions below but do also check out our more detailed Guide to Sussex.

Historic buildings in Sussex

  • The spectacular 11th Century Arundel Castle, family home to teh Duke of Norfolk, is set high on a hill above the town with views of the South Downs and river Arun. See collections of furniture, paintings, armour and weapons, as well as the Victorian gardens.
  • Chichester Cathedral at the Centre of city for 900 years is the site of the shrine to St Richard. It is full of treasures to view and it is also known for its collection of modern art.
  • Herstmonceux near Hailsham is renowned for its magnificent moated castle, set in beautiful parkland and superb Elizabethan gardens.

Other historic buildings in Sussex include Petworth House, Uppark, Parham House and Lancing College.

Museums

  • Amberley Museum is a 36 acre industrial museum set in the South Downs National Park. With traditional craftspeople, working narrow gauge railway and histroci bus service.
  • Bignor Roman Villa has some of the finest mosaics all in situ and under cover including the longest mosaic in Britain. Floors dating back to 350AD.

Other museums in Sussex include Fishbourne Roman Palace, Weald & Downland Open Air Museum and Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

Gardens

  • Denmans Garden in Fontwell is a unique 4 acre garden with year round interest. Has a Garden cafe and plant centre.
  • Nymans near Handcross is a wonderful garden full of experimental designs dating back to the late 1800's.

Other gardens in Sussex include West Dean Gardens, Wakehurst Place and Sheffield Park.

Countryside and Wildlife Centres

  • RSPB Pulborough Brooks Nature Reserve has a visitor centre and nature trail with lovely iews over the Arun Valley to the South Downs and is populated with a variety of wildlife all year round.
  • Arlington Bluebell Walk and Farm Trail has 8 walks over 3 working farms where you can enjoy anemones and bluebells and milking at neighbouring farm.

Other countryside and wildlife centres in Sussex include Southwater Country Park and Arundel Wetland Centre.

Amusement Parks and Family Fun

  • Drusillas Park is recognised as one of the best small zoos in Europe and a sun finding day out for children. Excellent kids play areas and lots to do and learn all year.

Sport in Sussex

  • Football. Brighton & Hove Albion play in the Championship, while up and coming Crawley Town in Football League Division 2.
  • Sussex is one of the leading County Cricket teams and they reside in Hove.
  • Golf. There is a Championship Golf Course at Uckfield.

Travel in Sussex

Sussex is an easy place to reach and travel around with good road and motorway networks, rail services and bus services supporting the region. London Gatwick airport is also in Sussex providing access to and from locations across the UK, Europe and the World.
