At its heart lies Rutland Water, which attracts visitors worldwide for bird watching, fishing and water sports. There is an abundance of excellent walks found locally with the Jurassic, Viking and Macmillan Ways to explore. The area is full of historic towns such as Stamford, 5 miles, which has been given conservation status. Once an important wool town, it has retained much of its old world charm and prosperity. Several of the buildings are of old Lincolnshire limestone, giving the town a fine appearance. There is much of interest in Stamford, including the Meadows (a pleasant place to picnic), All Saints’ Church and the picturesque Barn Hill behind it, as well as All Saints’ Brewery and Stamford Arts Centre, which has one of England’s earliest provincial theatres. Other towns of interest are Melton Mowbray, Oakham and Uppingham. Peterborough is 11 miles offers many amenities, including its magnificent cathedral.
