Enjoy the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Regattas on a Cottage Break

Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Cottage Breaks

The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing events are being held between July and September from Weymouth and Portland on the South Coast of England. It's sure to be a spectacular sight seeing the leading Olympians battle it out on the water in sailing classes ranging from Finn and Laser to 49er and RS-X.

Although tickets for Olympic events are hard to get hold of, as the sailing take place off shore it is possible to see it from many coastal vantage points and of course you can enjoy the party/celebratory atmosphere, events and attractions in Weymouth, Portland and near by towns.

Britain won 6 medals last time out at Beijing 2008, therefore so hopes are high for 2012 and so there is no better time to visit the Dorset coast for a weekend break, short break or holiday so take a look at some great self catering cottages below. 2012 Olympic Sailing Events

The 2012 Olympic Sailing regatta sees some of the World's best sailors welcomed to the shores of Weymouth and Portland competing for 10 gold medals. In Beijing 2008 Britain won 4 Golds and 6 medals overall and so British hopes are high for London 2012.

The 890 hectare Portland Harbour is the sailing venue and is also home to the new Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (from the Academy - in non Olympic moments - has boat hire and runs sailing and surfing courses).

The Olympic sailing programme gets underway on Sunday 29th July with the Mens Finn, Star and Womens Elliott 6m classes. The Mens Laser, 49er and Womens Laser Radial start on Monday 30th July with the RS-X and Mens 49 starting on Tuesday 31st July.

All of the sailing events have multiple races over a number of days and so there is sailing planned, subject to weather, every day from the 29th July until the last day on Saturday 11th August.

There are Medal ceremonies every day from the Sunday 5th August to Saturday 11th August.

Paralympic Sailing Events

Hot on the heels of the Olympics sailing comes the Paralympic sailing events on the same Weymouth and Portland water. Starting on the 1st September and running until the 6th September there are 3 medal events - single person keelboat, two person keelboat and three person keelboat.

With each event consisting of 11 races there is going to be plenty to see with the competition being every bit as hotly contested as the Olympic events.
