What is Cowes Week

First and foremost Cowes Week is a sailing regatta, the largest of its kind anywhere in the World. During the Week some 8,500 competitors, compete aboard 1,000 boats in 40 races each day on the water around the Isle of White and off the south coast areas of Southampton and Portsmouth.

Almost uniquely in this professional sports World the competitors will range from Olympic and World Class professionals to enthusiastic amateurs and complete novices... all competing side by side!

The sailing happens throughout the day, although start times are dictated by the tide.

Each year over 100,000 people come to watch the sailing and to soak up the unique atmosphere which includes lots of parties, live entertainment and activities on the promenade and in the marinas.

Cowes Week offers a wide variety of entertainment, with something to suit all tastes, from beer tents to live music stages and stalls selling all manner of both sailing and non-sailing goodies.

Cowes Week Self Catering

Cowes Week is a great event, held at the height of the English summer, so it will come as no surprise that self catering cottages, apartments, lodges and even holiday parks get booked very early - in fact many are booked for the following year right after the event!

However, if you can not get in to your first choice accommodation or it is too expensive during this week, then it is worth extending your search to the English mainland. Cowes and the Isle of White are within easy reach via the regular and fast ferry services - from early in the morning until late at night (well, in the early hours for those late night party goers). Therefore it is well worth staying in the Portsmouth, Southampton, New Forest and Hampshire areas and crossing for a day trip by ferry.
